The Bret Stephens bedbug thing pales in comparison to Trump’s crimes against immigrants, but there’s a common thread worth calling out. The same core logic. “If you won’t treat me like an authority, I won’t treat you like a person.”
For all his Never Trump talk, Stephens is just another white male supremacist. He gets treated as respectable in a way Trump doesn’t, but it’s the Brets of the world that made this administration possible.
That’s what’s so infuriating about Stephens’ NYT gig and MSNBC spots. Like his grammar and tone really make him different than a Trump or a Hannity. He’s the respectability politics version of guys like that. And these outlets are telling us that’s all that counts.
As long as white male supremacists like Bret act with a certain kind of decorum, mainstream news outlets treat them like acceptable company. But it’s the ideas that are offensive, not the style.
“[He] was trying to send a message that he stands above me in the status hierarchy.“

What a perfect summary of Trumpism.

Another day, another example of just how easy it is for white male supremacists to have their fake respectability validated by the mainstream press.

This. This right here. This is how we got Trump.
