It would be wonderful to see U.S. Democrats who'd like to get two Senate seats from a State of Puerto Rico give even the most fleeting thought to whether this can be reconciled with the Democrat-aligned PDP party's desire for greater, not less, independence from the U.S.
It may be that these two objectives are irreconcilable and Puerto Rico will just face inconclusive referendums as an unincorporated U.S. territory forever.

But I don't see U.S. Democrats even giving thought to whether there's a way to get to yes on this.
As someone brought up in the former British Empire this blithe ignorance of local political conditions seems to me to be the very essence of the colonial mentality.
If your thought is, "splitting CA/NY/TX/FL into two states each is just too crazy an idea to fly politically", you might want to reflect that for the half of Puerto Ricans who'd support a Democratic Senate caucus the idea of U.S. statehood is equally out of the question.
