With the extension until October, a key question is whether there’s enough time for a new #Brexit referendum. The timetable has previously been analysed in our detailed work on referendum options here:

Short answer: organising a referendum takes about 22 weeks, requiring legislation, plus question testing by Electoral Commission, then a 10 week campaign period (see our report: p. 14)

That’s 5 months, so just enough time by the 31 Oct deadline given the political will (2/5).
But meanwhile, as we said in our report, the European Parliament elections on 23 May could prove a kind of 'proxy referendum’: see below from p. 18.

Things have moved on, and we now have the @brexitparty_uk and @TheIndGroup (aka Change UK) all set to contest the elections (3/5)

Lots of discussion today about whether the length of #prorogation really matters given the upcoming party conference season. But conference recess hasn't been agreed. So we’ve crunched the numbers and yes, the length matters! (thread – 1/17!)
The government’s desire to bring this long session to an end and outline a new legislative programme in a Queen’s Speech could be met with a prorogation of one to two weeks. Anything longer than this is both unnecessary and beyond the norm. (2/17)
We do not yet know on which day between 9 and 12 September Parliament will be prorogued. The Order in Council states that it will be no earlier than Monday 9th September and no later than Thursday 12 September. (3/17)

In contrast to UK, there’s no sense of panic or crisis in EU regarding #Brexit - whether over the question of suspending parliament or the fact that no deal looks to leaders the most likely outcome now /1
On suspending Parliament the European Commission’s public response as ever is that it “won’t comment on the internal politics of another country” (Though sometimes it clearly does ..) /2
EU in watch and wait mode. EU leaders see no point in huddling in dark room re-thinking the backstop right now - This next act in the #Brexit drama is being played out in UK. It’s about domestic politics /3

EU leaders pretty convinced they will soon by faced with Boris Johnson as new UK PM and opinion is split /1
Talk to different EU diplomats and politicians from different EU countries and you’ll get a number of different opinions as to how #Brexit will play out in the autumn /2
Some see BJ as one of the key architects of the Leave vote and therefore one of the few UK politicians able to sell a compromise deal with the EU to Parliament /3

The increased support for a ‘no deal’ Brexit is the ultimate failure of the Leave movement. It’s the inevitable consequence of the refusal to grasp details, come to terms with complexity & coalesce around a plan. Compromise can be frustrating. So instead they will have a tantrum.
Some Brexiteers advocated sensible solutions. The EFTA/EEA solution gained a lot of traction in the years before the ref. Even Farage had promoted it & countless others. See Farage below from 2011 essentially making the ‘Liberal Leave’ case!
