/ A quick follow up thread to my earlier possibility about some possible discussions of the Comey Memos in the Strzok-Page texts, which may provide some additional context during the days before Comey’s testimony.
/ It appears that the Special Counsel couldn’t read the memos until after the classification review, which makes sense. If there were other equities outside of the SC’s authorized purview, that info would need to be redacted before the SC could view the documents.
/ The IG Report states that the Unit Chief of the Counterintelligence Law Unit was involved in the review. Per Sally Moyer’s testimony (and others), we know that she was the acting Unit Chief.
/ With this context in mind, we can start filling in some redactions in the texts...
/ This is after Baker, Strzok, Page, and Moyer made their initial classification decisions on June 1, but before Priestap actually classifies the memos on June 7.
/ Seems like here they are talking about possible violations by Comey when he leaked the memos? Pre-Publication Review regulations show up a lot in this latest IG Report.
/ “Marked” appears to be something in the realm of “marked classified”; as in, are they reading a version of the memos that have gone through the review or “raw” versions? Also very curious as to what is behind the two highlighted redactions. Finally, Jim = James Quarles.
/ Here again is where Strzok drops off the memos for Mueller to read first thing in the morning. I have thoughts on whose names are behind redactions based on SC team members and when they joined, but that’s not the focus of this thread.
/ Finally, some info on why Strzok has to stick around while Mueller reads. Would love to know more about this “DOJ classified space restrictions,” but appears to be something about the Bob’s clearance and the memos’ classifications. Strzok has to wait for the originals back?
/ I highly encourage everyone to go read ALL the texts from 6/5/17-6/7/17, keeping this ongoing memo discussion in mind. Other texts may be related, but not enough to screenshot and post about. Seems to highlight some add’l friction between FBI and the SC, at least at the start
/end These screenshots are from the originals, so the timestamp is off by a few hours. Easier to go to @nick_weil’s website, thespygateproject.org, where you can pull up the texts with the corrected timestamp.
TLDR: Mueller didn’t read Comey’s memos until 20 days into his appointment as Special Counsel.
