As I attended my local #StopTheCoup protest yesterday, I realised that I had carried a deep anger & hatred for the Tories all of my adult life. My first memory which seeded that anger was watching my aunt & uncle sob when my uncle was made redundant from British Steel.

He cried not only for his family, but as a Shop Steward, he felt he'd failed his co-workers. He then joined millions of unemployed & every week would stand in a queue for the Dole Office which went round the block in our Black Country town.

Next, I recall Thatcher flogging off our public services, making billions for profiteers. Although only a teenager, I couldn't understand how it could be right to sell off basic human necessities like water & gas/electricity. How I wish back then we'd told Sid to fuck off...

By the early 80's Thatcherism was in full flow, each policy which benefited the rich & disadvantaged the poor delivered with a Tory sneer: selling off our council housing stock has had ramifications for the poorest for over 30 years, even today we still suffer.

I watched in horror at the political & police brutality during the miners' strikes. I saw previously proud & prosperous towns become ravaged by under-investment & communities sink into despair, whilst in the City 'loads of money' types chugged Champagne & waved wads of cash.

The Tories terrorised decent people with the Poll Tax & the Bedroom Tax, whilst giving their rich pals tax breaks & turning a blind eye to tax avoidance.
They gave us Black Monday, Black Wednesday, interest rates which escalated wildly, resulting in record repossessions.

And in the last decade, the Tories have delighted in imposing on us Austerity, but bailed out the Banks. We've endured constant benefits cuts & caps, the decimation of public services, an NHS on its knees. They delight in the scandal of food bank usage, ignore child poverty.

They've presided over the Windrush Scandal & deliberately created a hostile environment, stirring up the xenophobia which contributed to the result of a Referendum which was only ever called to save the Tory Party from its own internal conflict.

And now they want to impose upon us a #Brexit which threatens peace, food & medicine supplies, the decimation of farming, huge job losses & the loss of our rights & EU Citizenship. It will gift the NHS to Trump & their wealthy pals, let them dodge tax avoidance laws.

So, as you head out to #StopTheCoup, do so with no shame or guilt. Johnson & his junta will not spare a single thought for the lives they damage, the democracy they are trashing, the economic pain we will suffer while the disaster capitalists profit. Be #ProudToProtest
