Important thread below explain why it is an incorrect reading of backstop text by Boris Johnson when he asserts that it would give Dublin more influence over Northern Ireland than U.K. /1
Polls in NI consistently indicatethe majority is in favour of the backstop - either the U.K. wide one, requested by Theresa May at the time or the original EU-suggested backstop where Northern Ireland only remains in customs union with EU and certain parts of single market /2
Delegation of NI businesses were in with European Commission negotiators in Brussels yesterday. Michel Barnier is scheduled to be in Belfast on Monday (tbc) /3

Boris Johnson should not underestimate the importance the EU places on unity when it comes to Brexit. I see no appetite in EU to turn back on Ireland over these proposals. /2
Since EU as whole doesn’t want to be seen to slam door in UKs face and since EU leaders want a deal and want to lean on the PM to build on his proposals rather than insist they take it or leave it .. /3

What not to expect: The EU coming out with an outright immediate rejection of the PMs proposals. Brussels does not want to be seen to be the one closing the door to a deal. Throughout this process they’ve again and again kicked the ball back into the UK gov’s court /2
I expect the EU to point out that various elements of the PMs proposal are not compatible with its red lines BUT the EU will likely say publicly that it’s door is open 24/7 to the gov to negotiate on the ‘basis’ of this deal /3

EU is going by the Benn Act. Recent Supreme Court ruling underlined the sovereignty of parliament. Parliament approved the Benn Act. The EU’s Article 50 text says an extension must be approved by EU countries plus the leaving member state. /2
Article 50 does not specify the extension must be approved by the government of the leaving member state .. So there is room for a court / representative of parliament to request and approve extension on UKs behalf /3

[Boris Thread] 1/ I have continued my analysis of Boris Johnson's hard Brexit (hb) tweets. In summary, his most recent HB tweet, sent on 20th September, shows continued large scale amplification by right-wing Trump supporting accounts. Stats to follow
2/ I analysed around 5,632 retweets of Boris's HB Tweet from the 20th. Around 4,276 of these accounts had biographical details on their profile. As with a lot of Boris' hard Brexit tweets, this one was also highly retweeted compared to his others.
3/ Indeed, this tweet was his fourth most popular out of his last 50 tweets posted over the last 10 days....

Is the #Brexit #backstop anti-democratic?

Nigel Dodds has claimed that the backstop ‘would see laws made in Brussels impacting the economy of Northern Ireland with no-one in London or Belfast able to vote on them or even ask a question about them.

#Thread: We may not have got a decision today but we did get insight into the Government’s view and position on the birthright provisions of the Good Friday Agreement. Here's a few of the basic arguments being put forward #WeAreIrishToo
On behalf of the Secretary of State QC Tony McGleenan opened by stating the FTT tribunal made an "fundamental & egregious error" in ruling in our favour adding that the tribunal should never have entertained our appeal because "DeSouza is not nor was not an EEA national"
He then went on to argue that there is an "important" distinction between identity and citizenship in the Good Friday Agreement and that the act of identifying as Irish only does not mean you are not as a matter of UK law British. He added that I was a British citizen by birth.

I don't believe that most people who voted leave have any malign intent towards us. I'm not a fan of the EU myself. Still less do I think its an England/Ireland thing, I was born in England, I was schooled there & my partner is English /2
But there is a yawning gap of comprehension about the troubles & what it took to stop it. /3

The likelihood of @duponline signing up to any agreement that creates a different regulatory environment for NI to the rest of the UK is still basically nil. The different structure would not just relate to a border but also to the governance of the single market. In essence...
NI would remain within at least parts of the single market – subject to rules set by Brussels, in which the Republic of Ireland would have a say. Sinn Fein will continue to be a political force in the Republic – meaning that they and the Republic would have more influence over...

The Protocol is intended as ‘insurance’ in case a future UK-EU agreement is insufficient to meet the commitments made in the Joint Report bit.ly/2Bgjvj6. In that sense it is *already* conditional & envisaged as temporary.
It is a backstop, not a precursor.

The Protocol is the EU showing most flexibility (cherrypicking) *for* Northern Ireland in the very areas that the UK is finding hard to swallow, i.e. NI being in a Common Regulatory Area and the Customs Territory of the EU.
