Surely the best approach for Labour is to reject all govt-led moves for an election, whether FTPA or legislation, get the rebel bill on the statute book, then trigger a vote of no-confidence.
There's then the 14 day period to form a govt, which may or may not work. If it does, you (Corbyn, Harman, whoever) extend A50 and set election date. If it doesn't, an election is called anyway, but with the rebel legislation in place.
It also starts the election process by demonstrating control over the PM, taking the swagger out of him, which isn't a bad way to go.
