I know, I know. I am a big wet liberal who doesn't understand the POTENCY and GLORY of law and order, but this whole set up makes me queasy.
It's not a problem with the police. I work in parliament. I like having police around because there are people who would happy blow it up.
It's the kind of image that a politician wants to project by being surrounded by police that's the problem.
Johnson trying harder to reestablish his after-dinner speaker mojo with a protracted gag about not remembering the 'you have the right to remain silent' script. Just sounds odd coming from the PM.
Is it something about the dynamic? Perhaps that jumbled clown routine is funnier when it comes from outside the tent. When you literally are the tent, it just comes across as pitiful rather than charmingly shambolic.
Johnson's Brexit bit really quite subdued and weak.
Interesting that Johnson's focus is not so much on painting Labour as Remain, but as the party that would drag on the Brexit debate by extending A50.
Emphasising that sense that whichever party can convince people they'll make this shit stop will win. Rather strengthens the view that Labour would be better off trying to force him to extend himself.
Is this the first time Johnson has taken questions from journos as PM? Because if so, literally the second one was 'will you resign'.
Johnson says "he'd rather be dead in a ditch" than ask for another extension. Sounds strong. But then you may remember what he said about Heathrow.
Christ the state of him. Seems knackered. When is that optimism we were told was going to change everything going to kick in?
What if those coppers aren't Tories or Brexiters? What if they liked May's deal? Are they ordered to stand up there anyway, while he sounds off his bullshit?
This is really, really bad. He's all over the place
Well that was an absolute disaster.
One of the coppers behind him, after being forced to stand for a very long time waiting for him to speak, eventually buckled and had to perch while he finished. Then he meandered on as she recovered.
First he asked her "are you alright". Then he just kept on going on and on as she sat there.
That wasn't far off May conference speech level bad.
