A Resolution supporting the Good Friday (Belfast) #1998Agreement has been proposed in the US #Congress.

Republican Peter King and Democrat Tom Suozzi brought forward the resolution to the House of Representatives.

The resolution “urges the United Kingdom and the European Union to ensure that any exit from the European Union by the United Kingdom supports continued peace on the island of Ireland and the principles, objectives, and commitments of the Good Friday Agreement”.

“will insist that any new or amended trade agreements & other bilateral agreements between the Government of the USA & the Government of the UK include conditions requiring obligations under the Good Friday Agreement to be met.”

Of all the things I've written on #Brexit, this is definitely the most quirky. 🏏

The 'night watchman' metaphor is to emphasise that the relevant parts of the #Protocol on NI/IRL need only kick in for any period when UK-EU conditions are sub-optimal.

It's an opinion piece primed for the #Ashes.

Co-authored with Bishop John McDowell, we argue the Protocol needs to be understood/designed as an interim arrangement that may or may not be called upon.

Allowing for this would avoid the mistake of risking all at this stage.

The purpose of the 'night watchman' in cricket is to avoid unnecessary losses and risks. Seems appropriate.

Somewhat unusually (for half an op ed), I dedicate this to my old English teacher, J.F.T.Gibbons from Newbury - a tremendous cricket fan & a sage & cherished friend.

1. #HMG has increased risk & uncertainty for all of Europe but has not put a single document with credible solutions on the table. David Frost & Steven Barclay have got to Burssels saying we want a deal but no solutions. @BrigidLaffan
2. @BorisJohnson has just now prorogued parliament which heightens U.K. crisis & signals to EU27 that political turmoil is gripping U.K. There is no incentive for EU27 to do anything other than keep channels open. @BrigidLaffan

Can't believe we're still trying to "get around" the #Brexit NI backstop

If you want to do your own trade deals, you need different tariffs & regs. If you need those, you need a border. If you don't want those, there's no point leaving the SM & CU.

We can't have a border
We're going to leave the EU, sign the WA, spend 3 years going around the houses and in the end we'll be in something like the CU & something like the SM.

There won't be a choice because we can't have a border on the Island of Ireland
#Brexit is pointless,
Brexiters can gnash their teeth & slap their heads but we have a unique situation & a long standing commitment
Brexit needs borders to make sense
We cannot have a border in Ireland
So Brexiters cannot have a proper brexit
And they all know it

"#Brexit and EU agencies", our extensive look into third country relationships of the 36 EU agencies and how the UK might fit in.

Albeit largely technical, agencies will have huge implications on Brexit.

Five points stand out in particular:
First, Agencies matter. Like the customs union, they are a technical aspect of the EU, that works and was thus hardly discussed in the UK before #Brexit.
But they are important for single market, but also justice and home affairs.

UK gov thus has already asked to continue participation in selected agencies, in particular in sectors important to the UK economy, like aviation, chemicals or pharma.
