A Resolution supporting the Good Friday (Belfast) #1998Agreement has been proposed in the US #Congress.

Republican Peter King and Democrat Tom Suozzi brought forward the resolution to the House of Representatives.

The resolution “urges the United Kingdom and the European Union to ensure that any exit from the European Union by the United Kingdom supports continued peace on the island of Ireland and the principles, objectives, and commitments of the Good Friday Agreement”.

It also states the House of Representatives
“will insist that any new or amended trade agreements & other bilateral agreements between the Government of the USA & the Government of the UK include conditions requiring obligations under the Good Friday Agreement to be met.”

'A delegation representing civic & business leaders in N.Ireland together with the ad-hoc committee established to protect the Good Friday agreement met with senior congressional figures last month amid continuing concern about the direction of Brexit in N.Ireland'

FWIW, here's a couple of thoughts on which I'd happy to be proven wrong...

We know #Brexit is having an impact already due to flux & uncertainty.

I don't think this #deal necessarily gets rid of this in either short term [will it get ratified?] or the long term [we, in theory, cd all be back pondering how to avoid a hard @BorderIrish in <6 yrs time]

The #deal on the table enables a hard Brexit for GB (what consequences for east/west?) and puts off nitty gritty of major and difficult decisions for the future, and (in theory) into hands of NI MLAs...

@BorderBrexit They're results of an online survey (475 respondents) from both sides @BorderIrish, conducted by @QUBelfast @milena_komarova & me for @europe_icban.

It shows rising anxieties re: a hard border & #NoDeal are having tangible effects in decisions & actions in border region.

Respondents report economic changes (e.g. job losses, business disinvestment, problems in labour recruitment) plus rising concerns about the #peace process & future stability.

"The Prime Minister and President Juncker had a constructive meeting this lunchtime. The Brexit Secretary and Michel Barnier were also in attendance.
“The leaders took stock of the ongoing talks between the UK’s team and Taskforce 50. The Prime Minister reconfirmed his commitment to the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement and his determination to reach a deal with the backstop removed, that UK parliamentarians could support.
"The Prime Minister also reiterated that he would not request an extension and would take the UK out of the EU on the 31st October.

Well well well. @MichelBarnier has written a column for the @Telegraph. It seems like a response to the @BorisJohnson letter to @eucopresident where the PM said the backstop contravened the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement. telegraph.co.uk/politics/2019/… (1).
He makes the point that the backstop is designed to maintain the status quo on the island of Ireland (a point often missed in the discussion, which is dominated by the issue of avoiding checks on the border) and that it’s already quite a big ask for the EU27.(2)
As a regular Barnier watcher, when he says he’s “not optimistic” about avoiding a No Deal I don’t think he means that he’s pessimistic and it’s becoming inevitable, just that he’s realistic. He’s always avoided giving optimism/pessimism verdicts to my great annoyance. (3)

@DUPleader @Andrew_Adonis @theresa_may Adds that all of the three things borders exist for - tarrifs, regulations, movement of people - none of them apply because of EU membership. All apply when we leave.

Backstop only became controversial when @DUPleader Arlene Foster objected to it. /3

On this day, 97 years ago, impossibly difficult negotiations were taking place in London concerning a small island nation trying to leave a union with the worlds richest single market and in which, just like today, Northern Ireland was a key issue.

THREAD:
The Anglo Irish Treaty was signed at 10 Downing Street on 6th December 1921. The sticking-point the UK has to overcome to achieve freedom from the EU today is the same sticking-point Britain presented the Irish negotiators back then: Northern Ireland.
