The kit is not admissible in court, but — victims’ fear and shame often prevents them from reporting their assault at a hospital, and rape is common enough to create demand, so rather than do anything to address those things, why not sell do your own useless rape kits instead.
This product basically tricks victims into forfeiting their opportunity for collection of admissible evidence. Imagine surviving one of the worst violations imaginable only to be told that your best chance of ever seeing justice is gone. You might pass your rapist on the street.
Imagine reporting your assault and submitting your DIY kit, only to be told it’s not enough, and your rapist telling everyone around you that it’s proof you lied.
Imagine having your agency ripped away from you, and then being told you shouldn’t have been there, shouldn’t have worn that, shouldn’t have done your own fucking rape kit wrong this is all your fault.
Imagine creating a product that, while hard to imagine, actually MAKES THINGS WORSE FOR RAPE VICTIMS.
Imagine having the gaul to market that product under the name, “metoo.”
