Not true. 1. EU only deals with governments. 2. Any request for extension would have to be debated and agreed by EU27 unanimously.
To clear any lingering doubts about automatic extension request via parliament, EU source texts that this is "nonsense".
On "hypothetical scenario" of Brexit extension request, "our official interlocutor is the government of the United Kingdom," says Commission spokeswoman.

@lesoir 1. If von der Leyen wants commissioner for 'Protecting our European Way of Life' b/c of need to uphold EU article 2 on fundamental values, why not give this title to @VeraJourova ?
2. On VDL suggestion that fundamental values (democracy, human rights, protection of minorities) specifically European. Is that really a wise move for European foreign policy vis-a-vis Ankara, Moscow, Beijing?

No British minister or official will be at today's EU council, in line with empty chair policy.

Council will discuss rule of law in Hungary and Poland, plus EU summit agenda (non Brexit).

Since 1 September, UK only attending meetings of “significant national interest".
Sajid Javid was at informal ecofin (finance ministers) last Friday in Helsinki.

UK will attend meetings "if and when it is in our interests" esp on sovereignty, international relations, security, or finance.

EU27 diplomats were briefed on Brexit talks this morning and were told the British had presented no proper, written proposals, on replacing the Irish backstop.

In Wed’s meeting David Frost and team outlined ideas on customs and manufactured goods in the context of alternative arrangements to backstop.
But the EU side do not think the ideas are adequate and continue to press for details.

UK also asked for changes to the political declaration - a reference to a “best-in class” free trade agreement as goal.

EU side repeat any trade deal must ensure a level playing field to avoid “Singapore-on-Thames” race to the bottom.
Refer to March 2018 guidelines.

Although process still ongoing, here some (preliminary) thoughts/ideas reflecting lessons from current (s)election of #EU leadership. Thread acknowledges that there is no 'perfect process' & assumes that Lisbon Treaty won't be (fundamentally) reformed in foreseeable future:
(1) #Spitzenkandidaten process suffered damage but it is here to stay. #GenieIsOutOfTheBottle: political parties will stick to it. BUT: process needs to be (continuously) reformed in light of previous experience while adapting to specific circumstances at beginning of new cycle;
(2) Key innovation of #Spitzenkandidaten process: introduction of #TransnationalList incl. all lead candidates. Voters should have 2nd vote to choose 'favourite' candidate from #EU-wide list. Innovation should apply in 2024 -> #EP / COM-P / (European) Council should endorse it.

OK, I've caught up with Twitter again & there's both some v. interesting exchanges & still a fair bit of apparent wider public confusion re: the date UK leaves the EU, A50 #extension & the SI to change 'exit day'. So, in interests of end-of-the-week clarity, here's another go. 1/
The date UK leaves the EU is an intl matter. It's not determined by whatever UK domestic law may say.Changing 'exit day' in UK law doesn't change date UK leaves the EU. See posts this wk by @woodstockjag & @DomWalsh13 as well as me, & eg @ProfMarkElliott & @carlgardner on here 2/
UK & EU have now agreed that A50 period, at the end of which the departing state leaves the EU, will be later than 29/3. The only way the UK still leaves the EU on 29/3 is if UK gov, or EU, or both, renege on the agreement reached last night. 3/

Don’t know which Europeans Mr. Hannan is speaking to but I haven’t met anyone in Brussels or in EU capitals who is unhappy with the Commission approach & I’ve spoken to a lot of them. #Brexit
In addition, no-one in the #EU is threatening the UK (I wld challenge Hannan to point to one threat that has come from a leading EU politician or negotiator), nor are they stopping the UK from leaving. #Brexit
The EU have been clear from the start that there are many trade models available to the UK & the UK have ruled most of them out. If it feels like the UK has little room for manoeuvre it is because the government painted itself into a corner. #Brexit
