Yup, it's as bad as it looks. Don't ask why, but it's on my desk this week as a colleague thought I should see it for myself.
It seems the chapter on Islam was added to a newer edition of the book, in the last part on "What Went Wrong" (But this ends up contradicting what he suggests in the previous chapter on Christians & Barbarians, in which he puts the blame for the fall of Rome on...guess who!) 
Thankfully, it helps that the person who lent me the book has highlighted the worst bits. Let's take a look:
Apparently, the famous imitation dinar by Offa of Mercia makes Boris Johnson feel a "thrill of Islamophobia"
At his mildest if most nonsensical, he speaks of "Muslim frogs" who "croaked in Arabic." Such is the fine prose one owes an Oxford degree in Classics! 👏
But mostly, Boris seems upset about Muslims not knowing how to party like the Romans did (Little does he know...)
So maybe a lesson on the "party-loving ethic" in the history of Muslim empires is necessary after all, as now fetishized in a new book and incisively critiqued by @sameerahim here: theguardian.com/books/2019/aug…
