My US podcast debut, in which I try to explain Brexit to those watching with befuddlement, and confess we feel the same. @RichLowry makes a good point on whether the complexity unearthed means you really need a rethink (and he's a supporter of Brexit)...
@RichLowry And just for my friends in the US I ask whether their Government would kindly consider getting rid of Buy America and the Jones Act prohibiting foreign provision of maritime services in a trade deal with the UK. They won't, so where are the big gains...? Haggis?
@RichLowry Obviously a growing view in the US that Brexit is simply cursed - or at least a good subject for a bit of humour to put us down...

@lisanandy @martinwolf_ I think any road to Brexit compromise would though require a totally different approach from Government than what we have seen for 3 years - being more open, discussing the options with more honesty, and properly scrutinising the deal on the table

Shouldn't be newsworthy but such are our days... would in turn mean that no-deal preparations for October are far less important, and the next five weeks are mostly a political holiday. We presume followed by a Queens Speech to announce the Conservative Party election manifesto.
Many outstanding questions - length of extension (3 months for election doesn't sound enough), election (does Johnson want an 'I failed, I'll succeed next time' election), party positions on Brexit (both Labour and Conservative under pressure to lose ambiguity)
If there was any doubt before, an extension is also the end of hopes of a quick comprehensive US trade deal, more because of US politics and their 2020 election than anything else (and bear in mind expiry of US Trade Promotion Authority to President in July 2021)

After tomorrow there may be no further Parliamentary scrutiny of Brexit plans, deal or no-deal, for six weeks.
If you were wanting Parliament to pass a deal you are providing no opportunity to discuss it with MPs to see if they are likely to be supportive, for 6 weeks
If you want the country to be prepared for no deal there will be no opportunity for MPs to ask questions of Government, or experts, for 6 weeks. Or for them to work with Government to reassure constituents

@ProsperityUK_ @NickyMorgan01 @GregHands Quick recap: why does this matter? Because if technology can solve the Irish border, then the all the UK can go 'bucaneering' and have independent trade policy outside EU single market and customs union, without leaving Northern Ireland behind.

BUT there's a problem... /2
The UK has committed to 'no new infrastructure' to make the border work and "no related checks and controls"...which makes it very difficult.

Add to this that 'no border' is what makes the Good Friday Agreement work, and local communities DONT WANT a border....

Once again they say there was a very strong instruction to Parliament - the minority was a tiny percentage - this can't be seen as a strong instruction.

Here are some of the key findings from the report in slide form.
First an overview of the study itself:
Rich qualitative data (online survey & focus groups) gathered across the Central Border Region. Detailed examples & viewpoints heard from people on both sides of #border.

Respondents to the survey came from across the 8 local authority areas of the Central Border Region, moreorless equally from both sides of the border. 50/50 male/female. 80% 31-65 yrs.
There were far fewer Leave-voting respondents so they got extra attention in our analysis.
