The thing in a movie where a beloved bad guy is exposed as a villainous murderer & his audience boos & hisses him & throws fruit & it’s cathartic but in real life you know there’d be 700 outlets bemoaning the crowd’s incivility & “cancel culture” & the violence of thrown fruit.
And you know the villain would insist on his innocence even after being exposed & his fans would pretend they didn’t know what they had just found out about him so they could go on enjoying his songs even though they had just learned he stole them from the songwriter he murdered.
And for sure one of your favorite comedians of all time would open his latest special by announcing that he didn’t believe the accusers and his whole crowd would cheer, and the people who criticized the comedian for doing that would be scolded for being so rude.

This is in response to me criticizing David Frum.

i’ll answer the question presently, but first I’d like to point out: if my criticism is silencing Frum, then this tweet is silencing me.

The issue with Frum is, he is one of the architects of the misinformation campaign that led to the Iraq war.

there has never been any sort of acknowledgment or reckoning on his part, and I think it is entirely appropriate to call him to account on that score
One reason that we are in this fascist pickle bowl right now is that the Iraq era showed evil people that there was no atrocity that wouldn’t be forgotten or normalized, given enough time and shamelessness.

Normalizing Frum today partakes in that phenomenon, and we shouldn’t.

18 years ago, a group who believed diversity is evil and that violence redeems hurt us as badly as they could, in hopes we’d embrace their extremist beliefs, and hurt ourselves a thousand times worse than they ever could.

If we wish to honor the dead, we should stop obliging.
The line I heard in the years after the attack was “they attacked us because they hate our freedoms.”

Maybe so.

Maybe we should think about what those freedoms were, and how we’ve given them up since.
They did it to activate the parts of us, already there, that would most harm ourselves— The parts most aligned with their own grim worldview, that believe that closed is strong and open is weak, that homogeneity is moral value, and that violence redeems.

My take on John Bolton getting fired is that every single Republican at every level of government should get fired and I’m not fussy about the order.
One reason people give to not get rid of so-and-so is fear the replacement will be worse; and it’s fear these fascists count on to secure our compliance.

Any Bolton replacement will be a horror. Bolton was a horror, too. They *all* have to go.

It's the same for fear of impeaching Trump, because oh no what if Pence.

The answer: Pence has to go, too.

But Trump is blatantly corrupt and manifestly unfit. Fear of Pence is no reason to not investigate and prosecute Trump ... and start investigating Pence's exposure.

The world of fiction wasn't ready for an out lesbian detective before then. What the world did have, a century before, was Hilda Serene, a lesbian detective who, typical for gay and lesbian and trans characters of the era, was out to knowledgeable readers without being *out*. 3/
