Production has doubled since the '09' figures in this piece. It gets the basics right, that #Heroin lit the US opiate epidemic. #BigPharma Rx was kindling. #Fentanyl the accelerant. But it was bulk heroin that was the cause.

The true story has been so successfully suppressed, it must be via some degree of quasi-official connivance? By seizing & reporting only on Mexican-border trafficking, they're able to propagate the official lie, that Afghan #heroin doesn't make it to USA! Lol.

CDC figures show the #epidemiology of the #heroin epidemic, began in Midwest, NorthEast, 2007-10 & spread out. #Afghan 'white' powder from the 'Great White North', -not- the desultory flow of Mexican 'brown' from South America.

Motive is less covert-overt than it was during illegal CIA wars in S.E Asia & Nicaragua, El Salvador etc.
This time around, it's tacit acceptance of Heroin production in Afghanistan. It's their only export commodity of consequence ffs.

The Taliban stopped opium production -dead- for their one year in power, 2001. The shortage showed up as a halving of O.D deaths in Australia 2001-02!
Interestingly, any US style epidemic surge has been delayed and (so far) relatively muted. I put this down to several factors...

1. We'd already had a CIA furbished epidemic last quarter of 20th. Century, c/o CIA backed guerrilla wars in Laos-Cambodia.

2. S.E Asian Golden Triangle proximity made Oz the natural market. Remember, at this time, US was awash with Cocaine but due to logistics, was priced out of all but Sydney illicit drug market in Oz.

3. Our remoteness from Afghanistan means a looong pipeline, growth has been logistically limited. I suspect recent increases as trafficking network has matured.

4. With a fairly balanced attitude toward legal prosecution & addiction rehabilitation, the conditions aren't as conducive to an epidemic of the underclass. Keeping in mind, Australia must've learnt -some- public health lessons during our previous heroin scourge? Hopefully... x

Hollywood will get around to making a truthful movie about the Opiate Epidemic... maybe in 20 yrs time?

The type of movie where the lovable American rogue turns a blind eye to the trade but somehow winds up a hero... because he's a lovable rogue, or something? Starrring Robert Downey Jr., Tom Cruise, or whomever - circa 2040.
