Reminder also that, in my experience with them, diplomats representing our allies loved McMaster too. He doesn’t get enough credit for it, but apparently he was a major conduit of communication for allied governments and it kept things appearing less chaotic in the world
That was one of the biggest surprises of covering Trumpworld early on. McMaster was viewed as a low key secstate/NSA hybrid, and along with Mattis kept the diplomatic gardens tended. Coming after Flynn, euro governments acted like they won the lottery (and in some sense they did)
One European country insisted that communication with Trump was far superior to Obama, mostly thanks to McMaster. Makes a big difference to have someone like that in govt. Part of why ‘oh no so many generals around Trump it’s a coup’ was not only stupid, but dangerously so.
