At times like this, I am reminded that the reason we have such weak and pathetic institutions in Nigeria is that some hotheaded 20-something year-old olodos, drunk on tea and crumpets from Sandhurst decided in January 1966 to commit the ultimate act of national violation.
The people who first brought guns into Nigerian politics and governance did not understand the meaning of the term "slippery slope."

People making terrible, life-changing mistakes always think the end they're seeking justifies their means.

Then we all get to suffer at leisure..
Ademoyega, Ifeajuna et al probably did not intend to destroy Nigeria as they knew it. But they could only see what they wanted, not the long-term consequences.

53 years later, nobody has learned the basic lesson of not sacrificing the future tree in order to eat seeds now.
If they had resisted the urge to act foolishly just because they had the power to, the Abachas, Buharis and Babangidas of this world would have remained in the barracks forever where I'm sure they were perfectly competent soldiers who would have served Nigeria with distinction.
Instead, they unleashed a domino sequence of events that resulted in Nigeria's finest brains being exported to the US, Canada and UK while the likes of Buhari get to make decisions about Nigeria's economic and foreign policy.

Actions have consequences...
