1/ As 4 Biden's suggestion that black folk need social workers to teach them how to parent: if you don't think that's racist (& classist, bc he was talking abt poor fams), yr incapable of rational thought...the idea that poor & POC parents are incompetent is bigoted & wrong...
2/ Honestly, when I worked in public housing communities in NOLA, with low-income black families, I saw some of the most involved and caring parenting I'd ever seen. More than among many of the rich fams whose kids I went to Tulane with...
3/ And many of us who grew up in nominally middle class homes (in my case, middle class culture but working class $$) had fams that were AT LEAST as dysfunctional as the ones Biden envisions for poor black folks...
4/ But no one ever suggested my parents needed parenting classes, or that there was anything wrong with our family at all. Why? Because it was presumed they had their shit together even when they didn't. Why? Whiteness, privilege, racism...
5/ Fact is, most parents could use some damned classes. Shit, I read multiple books and talked to tons of people about parenting before and after I became one. But we only assume a deficit of parenting skills among racial/cultural/class "others."...
6/ It's bad enough when your uncle does it, or a friend, or neighbor to whom you're speaking. But when someone who wants to be president does it, it should be disqualifying...
