God I find it weird the way people use the word 'conference' at conference.
'You look great conference...' 'Now, conference....'. 'Conference, it's time to....'. Sounds fucking mad.
Imagine if you did it when you had people for supper. 'Now dinner party, let's discuss...'
Suddenly struck by the fact that this is the first time I have seen someone vaguely my age make the leader's speech at a party conference.
Dreadful.
"I am Scottish. I am British. I am European. Scottish nationalism and English nationalism would both have me choose, but there is no contradiction." Lovely thing to hear.
Conference gags are the worst thing in the world.
They're literally worse than PMQs gags.
That was a meat-and-potatoes offering. Absolutely fine, did what it was supposed to do. Nothing to get the heart racing.
There's an opportunity with a new leader to draw a line under the past. Think Swinson would have been sensible to do that with austerity - an apology, a frank assessment if what went wrong and why they wouldn't do that again.
Electorally there isn't much immediate incentive, but generally when asked about it Lib Dems need better answers and that stuff chisels away at you.
I'm not entirely convinced she has much interest in economics to be honest.
She's not the best speaker, but not a bad one. And she's proved encouraging enough to get MPs to cross the aisle and mercenary enough to maximise the damage when they do.
She's good. They're in a better place than they've been in years. I just find it hard to imagine anyone getting very excited about what we just saw. Section on unionism and Brexit was only moment it really came alive.
