The Princess Bride trending reminds me how much I miss teaching contracts to undergrads. When I taught about voidable contracts for mental incompetence, a student would always ask how the other party/court would know, so I juxtaposed to examples. Ex. 1, when I'm old, I call

What is the goal of your models? Interpretability is important, but not the only thing. Other measures exist, but understanding your model is important to prevent outcomes, override recommendations, and to connect models to other systems - or stacks of models & systems. #ODSCWest
Example: placing racks in the Santa Clara data centre. Considerations, restrictions on space, power, future use of space, etc. Also: People install racks. They need to be able to intervene based on info that the placement model doesn't have. #ODSCWest

Look I’m pretty sensitive about Asian issues but there’s a difference between “character is bad at driving for a reason” and “character is bad at driving because Asian.”
Being bad at driving because you have anxiety is a thing.

But also—family dynamics, her older sister has been driving longer and will naturally be better, so she will generally take the wheel, meaning LJ doesn’t get practice. The comparison makes LJ feel worse.
And then not wanting to drive because it reminds you how much you miss your sister is also a thing.

I recently talked with graduate students in a seminar on #teaching practices in #HigherEducation about how to design and teach a course when you are not an expert on all of the content--which is really what most teaching is. Here are the main takeaways for those interested. 1/
In my experience, there are four main mistakes that novices often make when designing and teaching a course for the first time.

First, they approach the task by venturing off on their own into the wilderness of literature on all of the topics they don't know well. 2/
In other words, they prepare for course design as if it is a qualifying exam, attempting to become experts on all of the topics that the course will/should/must cover. 3/
