It's grotesque for journalists to grant sources anonymity so they can make these veiled threats of violence without putting their names to it.

There's a lot of very talented journalists in Westminster but the institutional norms are horrible and damaging to democracy.
I think there was an oddly important fork in the road in British and American journalism around the time of the Iraq war.

Major scoops about pre-war intelligence turned out to be false but whereas U.S. journalists responded by tightening up their act, the Brits failed to change.
In the U.S. it was Judith Miller, the New York Times' star national security reporter. Her scoops provided a lot of fodder for the argument that Iraq had an active WMD program.

I know we're waaaay on the far side of the looking glass now, but all this UK election goading ignores the fact that British ministers aren't meant to engage in such consequential business during the 25-day election campaign.

If there's a vote of no confidence on Thursday and Parliament is dissolved the same day, 25 working days takes you to ... October 31, Brexit day.
It's just a convention of course and Boris is contemplating breaking the law so I guess this is all just niceties now, but it's still a rejection of what British election campaigns are meant to be about.

The case brought by Jo Maugham, Joanna Cherry et al has produced a surprise result at Scotland's Inner House court. Judges have deemed the PM's advice was unlawful. This is being celebrated by Remainers. 1/
Firstly, the summary being circulated *is not the actual judgement*. That gets issued on Friday 13 September (unlucky for who, we can only hazard a guess). What we have here is a press release, issued, no doubt, by Jo Maugham & his merry Parliamentarians. 2/
Next, this is obviously being appealed. The Supreme Court scheduled emergency hearing on Gina Miller's case, the NI case & this one together on 17 September. As the arguments of the plaintiffs are essentially the same, this is a sensible use of overstretched court resources. 3/

One of the most striking features of the UK's interaction with Ireland over #Brexit* has been the constant reappearance of very resilient British ideas of Ireland which appear to be datable to the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

*not just Brexit either.
There is a striking coincidence here; the 50s and 60s are the last period in which Ireland experienced near catastrophic levels of emigration to England. Is it possible that the two are connected? It seems likely. How would that work?
There are a couple of things going on here in both British and Irish culture. First the Irish one; it is no easy thing to emigrate. Irish family ties are very strong, and to abandon them all to live abroad is hard. It requires a very strong justification to be constructed.

One way or another a British prime minister will sign the NI backstop. Either it will be May as part of a negotiated exit deal or by someone else after we crash out when the EU is calling all the shots and demanding all its own terms.

Should we crash out then if even half of no deal warnings are true (and there is plenty evidence to suggest they are) then UK has zero leverage of any kind and will simply have to concede to whatever the EU puts on the table just to reopen talks - as no deal cannot stay no deal.
There is really no way to avoid a backstop of some sort. A review clause is the best we can hope for. The best strategy is to sign it then make damn sure it never gets activated by joining Efta and retaining the EEA. The remaining issues are then far simpler to resolve.
