#Rulebreakers such as myself have some important advice for you. [thread]
When someone tells you you have broken a rule, sends you a notice, calls you in for a meeting, writes you up, don’t get upset.
Take these 2 important steps:
1. Ask yourself if the rule has any value. Is it logical? What is it’s purpose?
2. What is the punishment?
Rules that pertain to patient safety, feelings and rights of the vulnerable, care and attention to coworkers who care for patients with you are worthy of consideration.
Rules written by little people to control you or to meet some abstract meaningless metric are not.
If the punishment is a cardboard box with the stuff from your desk in it, pay attention.
If the punishment is an email, a letter, a verbal warning or some other intangible, don’t let your behavior be modified by Psych 101 maneuvers.
Reply with a “hmmmm” and continue the important work you do each day caring for sick human beings in a broken system.

The people who make these most of these little rules could neither do it not understand what it takes to get it done.
