Read the White House’s twisty-pretzel logic on why giving housing to homeless people increases homelessness actually: bit.ly/34XdAel
The White House report argues that Housing First policies will free up the best spots for encampments in parks, under bridges, etc, thereby—and I cannot stress this enough—increasing demand to be homeless bit.ly/34XdAel
The White House argues that unhoused people are lucky-duckies: “If people who end up in homeless shelters are provided rental subsidies or other forms of assistance, this could increase the incentive for people to turn to shelters in the first place or to stay in shelters longer”
Note that the White House staffs a U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness. Their expert recommendations, produced last year, under Trump even!, contradict the White House CEA report wholly. usich.gov/home-together/
Some galaxy brain thinking here:
“To the extent that housing programs over time house people who otherwise would have no longer been homeless, they no longer have any effect on reducing homelessness until the unit becomes vacant and a new person is removed from homelessness.”
