We are starting to hear #housing platform positions from the @CanadianGreens, @CPC_HQ, @Liberal_Party, and @NDP. Here’s what I have to say about that! #Elxn43 #ahomeforeveryone, #includecoop.
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP The lack of supply and affordability in the Canadian housing system is a national crisis. When you don’t have an affordable place to call home, it is damn near impossible to #chooseforward, have #timeforyoutogetahead, to #renewthesocialcontract or be #initforyou. #Elxn43
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP See what I did there? Those are some of the party platform hashtags.
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP + 1.7 million households needs are not being met by the housing system, & over 250K people experience homelessness every year. This is unacceptable to Canadians (the polling data backs this), and the federal gov must take comprehensive action to end the housing crisis. #Elxn43
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP 40% of renters are squeezed by unaffordable rents. Housing platforms that only focus on homeownership alone can’t and won’t solve the housing crisis. This approach is akin to curling without brooms, and only throwing half your rocks down the ice! #Elxn43 #includecoop
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP 50% of single mothers are spending too much on rent, making it difficult to make ends meet and afford other essentials. #Elxn43 #ahomeforeveryone, #includecoop
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP Another troubling indicator shows higher proportions of overspending among Indigenous-led renter households. For instance, in Saskatoon, 54 per cent of Indigenous renter households spend over the affordability benchmark, compared to 42 percent for non-Indigenous renters...
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP ...and Nunavut, 43 per cent of Indigenous-led renter households are in an overcrowding situation compared to just 6 per cent reported by non-Indigenous renter households.
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP Half of senior households are spending 30% or more of their income on rent. This is dangerous, and leads to impossible trade-offs between groceries, medications, transportation and social engagement. #Elxn43
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP Younger Canadians, in addition to dealing high levels of student indebtedness and a gig economy, also face terrible housing prospects. 44% of younger renters (aged 30 and under) overspend on rental housing. #elxn43
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP In housing markets big and small, the housing crisis touches us all. Good luck finding a place to rent in Charlottetown, where rental vacancy has dropped to almost 0%, and 20% of renters are spending at least half of their income on rent. #Elxn43…
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP Newcomers also face systemic inequities in choice and affordability of rental housing. On average, these households experience severe unaffordability and overcrowding. #Elxn43
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP Let’s follow the party leaders to talk about the lack of rental supply and affordability in their home ridings. Let’s go west to east. #Elxn43
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP First up, is @ElizabethMay in #SaanichGulfIslands. Nearly half of all renter households in the riding pays 30% or more of income on rent and 1 in 4 pays 50% or more income on rent! #unaffordable #Elxn43
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP @ElizabethMay Next, we check in on #BurnabySouth and @theJagmeetSingh, where 45% of renters spends 30% or more on rent, and 25% of renters spend 50% or more income on rent! #unaffordable #Elxn43
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP @ElizabethMay @theJagmeetSingh Next stop is #ReginaQuAppelle where there are 8,060 renter households in
@AndrewScheer’s home riding. Looks like folks are having a hard time after retirement affording a place to call home. 60% of seniors (65+) can’t afford the rent! #unaffordable #Elxn43
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP @ElizabethMay @theJagmeetSingh @AndrewScheer And in #Papineau, where 72% of households rent in
@JustinTrudeau’s home riding, 35% of households are spending too much on rent. The youngest and the oldest are having a tough go, where 40% of renters under 30 y/o, and 43% of seniors (60+) are overspending on their rent. #Elxn43
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP @ElizabethMay @theJagmeetSingh @AndrewScheer @JustinTrudeau I think I’ve regurgitated enough data to show the housing crisis is systemic, and it cuts across all geographies and demographics. A systemic crisis deserves non-partisan all-party solutions. #Elxn43 #ahomeforeveryone, #includecoop
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP @ElizabethMay @theJagmeetSingh @AndrewScheer @JustinTrudeau With the remaining time left in this campaign, voters expect all parties to present solutions from across the housing spectrum. Here are some must haves… #Elxn43 #ahomeforeveryone, #includecoop
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP @ElizabethMay @theJagmeetSingh @AndrewScheer @JustinTrudeau Increase the supply of community housing, including co-ops. Community housing is affordable forever, led and managed by local communities, and puts people ahead of profit. Provide dedicated and long-term grants, low-cost loans + surplus government land to get units built! #Elxn43
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP @ElizabethMay @theJagmeetSingh @AndrewScheer @JustinTrudeau Preserve the existing stock of community housing. Nearly a million Canadians live in community housing, incl. many vulnerable households that face systemic discrimination + exclusion. Keep community housing in a good state of repair, + provide long term rental assistance #Elxn43
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP @ElizabethMay @theJagmeetSingh @AndrewScheer @JustinTrudeau Recognize housing as a human right. The right to adequate housing is protected in the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, as well as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights...
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP @ElizabethMay @theJagmeetSingh @AndrewScheer @JustinTrudeau A Canadian right to housing will give redress to individuals and communities facing systemic discrimination and exclusion from adequate housing. #Elxn43 #ahomeforeveryone, #includecoop
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP @ElizabethMay @theJagmeetSingh @AndrewScheer @JustinTrudeau Create and implement an urban, rural, and northern Indigenous housing strategy. Fund it adequately. Although 87 percent of Indigenous peoples live in urban, rural, and northern settings, current federal housing policies largely exclude these groups.
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP @ElizabethMay @theJagmeetSingh @AndrewScheer @JustinTrudeau Colonization and systemic racism have created structural housing inequity and inequality among Indigenous households. It is time to let urban, rural, and northern Indigenous peoples plan and lead housing solutions with funding support from the federal gov.
@CanadianGreens @CPC_HQ @liberal_party @NDP @ElizabethMay @theJagmeetSingh @AndrewScheer @JustinTrudeau There's still time in this campaign to make #housing commitments that address the entirety of the housing spectrum. Retweet if you want to hear more from all parties on this #1 public issue. @AndrewScheer, @ElizabethMay, @theJagmeetSingh, @JustinTrudeau #elxn43 #cdnpoli
