I'm a great believer in being able to count - given 21 former Tory MPs and at least 8 others clear there are no circumstances under which they would vote Jeremy Corbyn in as PM then the numbers don't add up and an alternative compromise candidate will be needed. /1
The Mother of the House, Harriet Harman, and Margaret Beckett are both senior members of the House of Commons, both Labour MPs who could command a majority, and have said they would serve as caretaker PM. It is hard to fathom why the Labour leadership would reject them. /2
The majority for an emergency government lies among the independent former-Conservative and former-Labour MPs sitting in the House of Commons, and they will not support Jeremy Corbyn as a caretaker Prime Minister. Here's just a flavour. /3

These are just some of the MPs an emergency government would rely on who would not support making Jeremy Corbyn an interim Prime Minister. The Labour leadership must say who else they would be willing to back to lead a government that could command a majority in the Commons.

@JoSwinson's claim that there's no Commons majority for Corbyn as PM is further backed up by Dominic Grieve today: “Corbyn is unfortunately a deeply divisive figure and in trying to stop a no-deal Brexit it is not my purpose to help him into Downing St."

THREAD: Speculation about the UK leaving the European Union without a deal has been at fever pitch. Dominic Cummings has suggested it’s too late to stop it, and No 10 is clearly gearing up for a No Deal Brexit outcome. (1)
In such a scenario, the 245,000 UK firms that currently only trade with EU countries will need to apply for an Economic Operator Registration and Identification number (EORI) to trade goods into and out of the UK. Less than 3 in 10 have. (2)
If firms registered at the current rate it would take until 2021 at the earliest for UK exporters to be ready for a No Deal Brexit, leaving EU/UK trade seriously undermined, putting hundreds of thousands of jobs at risk - just one example of the chaos that would follow. (3)

This @TheIFS report is a damning indictment of this Tory Government. The fact there is inequality and poverty on this scale in this country - one of the biggest economies in the world - is an utter disgrace. The key findings.... /1
@TheIFS This was only the fourth year in the last 30 years in which household incomes have not grown, with median household income stalling completely in 2017–18 /2
@TheIFS Reductions in the amounts of working-age benefits pushed down the incomes of poorer households in 2017–18. I have not heard of any Tory leadership candidate credibly explaining what they will do about this which was of all their doing. /3

Lots of discussion in last week abt an emergency govt to extend article 50 and call an election or referendum.

Labour insisting today Jeremy Corbyn should be PM. But having crunched the numbers again, extremely hard - maybe impossible - to see how that gets a majority (cont)

Let’s add a little context to the discussion of voting security in the US. To do that, I’m going to do something Computer Scientists are bad at - I’m going to talk about history. Specifically, let’s look at the Help America #Vote Act (HAVA) of 2002. 1/
The reason to talk about HAVA is to start recognizing some of the challenges of paper ballot-based voting. HAVA came about largely because paper ballots were proving to be extremely difficult to manage. 2/
For instance, paper ballots are expensive (they’re not printed on standard college-rule paper), and they’re not reusable across elections. You’ve also got to try and guess who is going to show up to the poll, and how many ballots you’ll need in each language. 3/
