Quick dive into @StatCan_eng's quarterly population estimates released on Monday.

Series of charts coming... #cdnecon #cdnpoli 🇨🇦👨‍👩‍👦‍👦
@StatCan_eng Let's start with quarterly population change for Q2 2019. Prince Edward Island led the way, clearly due to tourists visiting Anne of Green Gables, falling in love with the place, and remaining.

Overall, Canada grew by 0.5% in the quarter.
@StatCan_eng Year-on-year, Canada grew by 1.4%. Again, PEI led the way. AB, Nunavut and Ontario also above the national average.
@StatCan_eng Next we dig into the components of growth:
- int'l migration
- interprov migration
- natural (births-deaths)

SK, MB, NL and NT experienced net "out-migration" to other provinces.
@StatCan_eng We can take a closer look at the "natural" component, separating it into Births and Deaths.

Here we really see the age differences of the Western (and Territories) vs Atlantic provinces.
@StatCan_eng We can look at all the components of change, for each province, over time.

* see PEI's surge in INTERNATIONAL in-migration
* MB's consistent net INTERPROVINCIAL out-migration
* NL's big drop in NATURAL growth (to now a decline)
@StatCan_eng In terms of interprovincial flows, I'll plot a few relative to AB (sorry, non-AB folks...)

Here are BC/AB flows since 1990. They remain on net heading to BC, but large movements both directions.
@StatCan_eng Here's AB/Sask. The flow westward (on net) continues...
@StatCan_eng Here's AB/Ontario. After a brief period of heading east, folks have realised the @MapleLeafs suck and are heading back to Alberta again.
@StatCan_eng @MapleLeafs And here's AB and all the Atlantic provinces combined. A historically westbound flow reversed during AB's recession.

That has flipped again, with people in the Atlantic provinces again heading westward (NB: NB is the outlier, with net NB-AB flow being eastbound)
@StatCan_eng @MapleLeafs And lastly, for the #ableg #abpoli crowd, here are the components of population growth for Alberta over time.

A brief negative for interprovincial flows during the recession has returned positive over the past few quarters.
