President Trump’s call with Ukrainian President Zelensky, described in the White House Memo of Conversation (MemCon), is unequivocal: Trump uses the power of the Presidency against a domestic political opponent. This is, as I've said, profoundly corrupt, reminiscent of Nixon. 1/5
Since then, Trump’s supporters have trotted out a series of defenses, none of which deserves to be taken seriously – e.g., the MemCon is hearsay, Trump only mentioned Biden by name once, the whistleblower is probably a Democrat, etc. 2/5
Probably sensing the inadequacy of those defenses, Trump is doubling down on his strategy to just brazen it out, and publicly calling on China to investigate Biden. And this time, the possible quid pro quo is not aid to Ukraine but a trade deal with China. 3/5
BTW, Trump is likely wrong about who has leverage on a China trade deal – he desperately needs one before November 2020. For that reason, I’d be worried if I lived in Hong Kong: China will want – and get – a US concession not to fuss when it cracks down on HK demonstrators. 4/5
Regardless, however, America is now faced with a very stark choice: do we want to be a country in which elected officials can use their governmental power to attack political opponents? If not, it’s pretty simple: Trump has to go. 5/5
