Trump isn't making Republicans worse. Trump is merely revealing how bad they've become.
Even before Trump, Republicans were becoming more hostile to democracy itself. Between extreme gerrymandering & voter ID laws that were racist in intent, it was about rigging the electorate.

Not just embracing foreign meddling in our elections, but actively seeking it out would just be another step in this Republican devolution. But it would be a particularly dark — and unpatriotic — one.
Why have Republicans become so hostile to democracy? Because their their base doesn't want them to change their racism, and their donors don't want them to change their unpopular adherence to tax cuts for the rich.
That means the only way to win is to restrict the electorate.
