Political news in this country is knackered. It's not any one person, or group of people. It seems to be something wrong in the machinery of news.
Maybe it's a lack of money, or over reliance on their inside sources, I don't know.
Anything to do with Brexit, English news has been wrong at every stage. And the reason is quite simple and quite innocent. I don't think anyone has done a bad job on purpose
For the last three years the European Union has been presenting legal fact, and English media has almost entirely ignored it.
But English media has been very good at repeating and reporting, and reporting quite accurately, what English politicians have said.

It just so happens English politicians have been talking bollocks for the last three years.
And that, I'm afraid, is the problem. One side in Brexit is talking rationally, the other side is talking bollocks, and English media gets all its news from the side that's talking bollocks.

It seems to me that there's something quite primitive going on here. People are starting to treat the law with a kind of mysticism, and judges as a kind of magus.
It's just a law. It sets out the conditions that bring the law into effect, and the action that has to follow.
It's just a set of instructions. The obligation is entirely contained in the fact that it is an Act of Parliament.
That's why there are no loopholes.
I'll explain because I love explaining human behaviours.
The only objection Boris Johnson has to the Benn Act is that the government did not commission it. In his head, that undermines its authority.

But as this is the Friday, we know that parliament can no longer vote for anything even if it wanted to.

It is, thank fuck, too late.
You can check my working if you want. It's too late for a vote on Monday.
But parliament is being prorogued on Tuesday so it couldn't come then either.
Parliament is then off for the rest of next week, and it won't be open again until Monday 14th
But. When parliament does come back on Monday 14th it has to deal with the Queen's speech - redundant affair as it's bound to be.
Parliament will not vote for a withdrawal agreement that week.
And on Thursday 17th is the EU summit

You've got one option, to stay in the European Union.
You're going to have to tell people eventually, you may as well do it now. I mean, they are going to notice.
There's no point even fighting about it. They can't put a border in Ireland because of Europe and Ireland and America.
They can't put a border in the Irish Sea because of the DUP.
And the only thing compatible with all of that is the deal that nobody wants because it's shit.
The answer is not leave at all. Cancel Brexit. Abandon the whole fuckin idea.
And that was obvious years ago. Why are we still dealing with this? Why are we still banging our head against the same wall after so much time?

people who have some social capital need to understand the kind of events where smaller people are like "hey, so we matter" are opportunities to follow through on the actual ideas we are advocating for
there are caveats and limitations to what we can do as content creators. to pretend we can literally start the revolution ourselves is misguided

however, we can put forward a new mode, we can communicate, we can build power that is not directly subject to an institution
it is my belief that creators who gain social/hard capital in the leftist space on a capitalist platform are in a position to subvert things

it is also my belief some part of a leftist movement must be securing the material conditions of those doing work for it

I subscribe to a lot of thread writers. I think diversity of opinions is a good thing. It forces me to think through what I think I know. Today I was alerted to this thread by @OnWithLogic: threadreaderapp.com/thread/1007264…
He takes on @Debradelai, @drawandstrike and @ThomasWictor and labels them “fame whores”. I found that interesting. It’s not how I would label them, especially Thomas, who seems not to care who he pisses off or whether or not you follow him.
Basically, it’s a Q followers vs. skeptics thread. He follows and believes in Q, those guys don’t. But he says several things that are illogical to me, which is ironic, given his handle.
