Keir Starmer urgent question now on publication of legal text for govt’s Brexit proposals.
James Dudderidge, Brexit minister: “the Legal text (which we have sent to the Commission) will only be published when we think it will assist the negotiations.”
Starmer asks if full legal text tallies with the PM’s assertion that there would be no checks at or near the border, “or at any other place”. Varadkar has implied legal text says otherwise, so we need to see full doc, says Lab.
Dudderidge says that the text won’t be published until “the time is right...the sharing of a full text at the moment will make a deal more unlikely.”
Starmer was fixing Dudderidge in the eyes as the latter was speaking: “This is contemptible”, he repeated.
Victoria Prentis says that as someone involved in the “MPs for a deal” group, “it’d make my life much easier if the protections on the environment and workers’ rights” which were agreed between Lab and Tories under May were “included in the deal”....
But then Prentis says that she thinks the best place for them would be in the political declaration. Minister agrees.

That, of course would make the protections completely non-binding. Hard for a Lab MP to defend...
Duddridge is asked if the DUP has had sight of the full legal text. He responds: “I’m not going to get into detail of...will not comment on who has seen which documents"

So yes then, probably.
Lab MP Barry Sheerman not impressed with Brexit minister James Duddridge’s performance: “Until about half an hour ago I had no idea who he was. I wonder how he can be so deeply unpleasant to so many colleagues on this side and on that side.”
Not clear from this that even Brexit minister James Duddridge has seen full legal texts of govt Brexit proposals. Refuses to confirm that he has done so.
