I looked into Trump‘s Sir Story about how the US “didn’t have ammunition” when he took office.

As usual: wrong. But turns out there’s a kernel of truth! The military reported a *shortage* of *certain* munitions on account of anti-ISIS bombing. Facts: cnn.com/2019/10/09/pol…
None of this is to say that the Sir part of Trump’s story — about a top general supposedly telling him “we don’t have ammunition” — is accurate. @MarkHertling calls the story “ludicrous,” saying generals would express concern about munitions levels but would never say that.
It’s also not clear the reported shortage of precision-guided bombs ever had any impact on operations; officials’ concerns were more about having enough to cover possible contingencies. But: many Sir Stories are 100% nonsense, so the existence of some truth here was news to me.
