A more accurate title should be

"Why are old economists like me unfazed about how consistently wrong we have been over the past decade?"

That would be an interesting read - ie how a brookings position and an economics education manages to remove any sense of social shame.

But no. Rather than using their extensive budget & agglutenated genius to reflect on their own intellectual failings, the Brookings Borg is instead deeply concerned about millenials focusing on issues like climate at the expense of "equally serious" fiscal concerns.

Fuck off.

Apologists of doves like Yellen & Bernanke love to say they did the best poss job under the circumstances. But when they turn around and add their name and prestige to institutions like Brookings, who then credibility-wash tripe like this, it's hard to claim they have clean hands

This kind of article deserves to be removed, with an apology by Brookings for indulging in baseless fearmongering and making misleading and inaccurate statements about the prevailing state of economic theory regarding the deficit/debt.

It is unacceptable to play 'whataboutism'

in response to young millennials who are bravely standing up to demand policymakers (finally) offer a serious response to the climate crisis - a demand that old people like this author failed to do for decades when they had the power to do so.
