Been a hell of a week, so only just got round to this @jrf_uk report by @franksoodeen & @claire_ainsley on lower-income voters - but it definitely repays attention jrf.org.uk/report/every-v…
Much of it is about politics rather than policy so will skip over that bit lightly - though some v interesting charts eg this on voting intention vs income
And this on flow of voters since the last election (did someone say febrile political environment?)
But more broadly I was struck by how much it matched up with @CPSThinkTank's work/findings on how to help people in their everyday lives - eg our focus on cost of living and putting more money in people's pockets at bottom end of income scale
The importance of helping small/local/family businesses - and of course the reminder, as I wrote in @TheSun last week, that people really care about buses (@emmamrevell is my spirit animal on this)
There was also very strong support for 'helping small businesses to grow by reducing the amount of paperwork they have to do' - a big focus of @nickphking's great report 'Think Small' cps.org.uk/research/think…
But perhaps the biggest thing was on the economy. Low-income voters are - understandably - pretty fed up with how things are going for them
And very concerned (as mentioned above) about cost of living
But while they're compassionate to those in need (especially the disabled), they don't just want more spent on benefits - tax credits for low-paid workers rank far more highly
This echoes the big argument in our report 'Make Work Pay' that a) tax cuts should focus on low-paid, and b) priority should be making it more rewarding to work, eg by raising NI threshold to give people £1k a month tax-free or cutting UC taper rate cps.org.uk/files/reports/…
Anyway, it's a big piece of work, and lots of people will find lots of things in there - but personally found it encouraging that we're working on things people really do care about...
