I’ve been sampling opinions about moving abroad. The funny thing is that ALL the reasons people were giving for moving abroad today were the exact reasons I gave for moving abroad 30 years ago. Anyone that didn’t support that ambition was an enemy. Let’s do a short thread...
“Don’t tell me things are hard there. There is no way it would be that it won’t be better than Nigeria. At least I will have light and healthcare and good roads” “Don’t tell me some people went and didn’t make it. That is them. Me I will make it. Am I not a sharp Naija guy?
“My friend that emigrated the other day is already sending dollars. See the fine car he’s leaning on in his picture.” In our time, some people were so focused on moving abroad that they were not looking for work here. They even refused to do NYSC, convinced they’ll never return.
Most sat at home daily, watching TV and daydreaming. If they write letters to any friend abroad and that person doesn’t reply immediately, they will write again to say “You left me here to die.” The whole neighborhood will know they want to travel. Time will be passing.
Look, things are hard everywhere. You can also make it everywhere. Some of us that traveled, it worked out for us. Some of that refused to travel, it worked out for them too. We are basically at par now career-wise and financially. It didn’t work out for some that went or stayed.
I lived abroad for 15 years. I’ve been back home for 15 years. If your heart is on traveling, go! If you want to stay, stay. In 30 years’ time, you & some of your peers will be at the same level. Some will be higher than you. Some will be lower. Just work as hard as you can. End!
