It boils down to 3 key pts: (1) the transition period is short; (2) the political declaration is a non-binding statement of intent and any negotiation with the EU will need to cross difficulty in any event; & (3) NI is a special case and it is reasonable to give Stormont a role.
Underlying all these, however, is a fourth. This may well be the only means of leaving the EU. Anything is possible if the Benn Act comes into operation, including a vote to take control of the order paper a Revocation Act if an extension is vetoed.
It is not worth taking that risk.
This agreement is far from ideal. I believe (but I cannot know) that a much better one could have been negotiated had circumstances - in July 2016, June 2017, December 2017 and September 2019 - been different. But they weren’t.
Back this agreement or risk Brexit disappearing.
