The real story - as opposed to Downing Street spin designed to deflect attention from the real story - is that Johnson is complying with the law.

The sound, fury, and threats from Downing Street (all dutifully reported by correspondents who should question before passing on) resulted in a damp squib of a second letter.
As Johnson might say “parturiunt montes, nascetur ridiculus mus”: the mountains laboured, and gave birth to a ridiculous mouse.
I really don’t like the constant pile ins on @bbclaurak but the fact is that @BethRigby got it right here. Particularly with this Downing St, it is perhaps wise to pause for reflection (and a cross check with those who know the area) before reporting spin.
