/5 Today seven Catholic peace activists are going on trial for breaking into the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in St. Mary’s, Georgia on April 4th, 2018, the 50th anniversary of the assassination of MLK, to engage in symbolic acts of disarmament. kingsbayplowshares7.org/#background
/5 Among the participants in this action was 79 year old Liz McAlister, a Catholic Worker, peace activist and wife of Catholic Peace activist Phil Berrigan, who helped plan the 1967 Catonsville 9 action and engaged in the first Ploughshares Action in 1980 at King of Prussia, PA.
/5 There have been 100 Ploughshares actions around the world by radical peace activists seeking to make real the prophet Isaiah’s command to “beat swords into plowshares”. These folks risk years, even decades in prison protesting weapons of mass destruction.
/5 Filmmaker and historian Joe Tropea has made a terrific documentary about this long tradition of radical peace activism: tubitv.com/movies/414052/…
/5 This kind of radical action should prompt hard questions about the risks we should all be willing to make in the face of existential threats posed by nuclear weapons, climate change, etc. Most people will never even hear of the Kings Bay Ploughshares activists. More should.
