Key things I’ll be interested in when WAB is published later today:

(a) how does it propose to meet/replace the requirements for ratifying the WA

(b) what role does it give Parliament in the next phase of the negotiations

(c) how is UK negotiating mandate constrained

(d) how is the effect of the ECA preserved to deliver the transition period

(e) how does it treat developments in EU law before it is “retained” as UK law post transition

(f) what status is given to the WA in domestic law (the Article 4 question)

(g) what if any provisions are included about Parliamentary sovereignty and what legal significance do they have

(h) how many Henry VIII powers proposed, how widely are they drawn and can they credibly be more narrowly drawn

Good morning. Today Parliament sits for its first Saturday sitting since the Falklands War in April 1982. MPs will debate whether to give the PM the “green light” for his renegotiated Brexit deal. The @commonslibrary explains here what’s going on commonslibrary.parliament.uk/parliament-and… (1/x)
However, we don’t know yet whether MPs will have a straight “yes or no” vote on the Prime Minister’s deal. This is because we can talk about “approval” for his deal in two distinct senses.

The first sense is “legal”: there are two laws that say the PM needs MPs’ approval. (2/x)
The first law is s.13 of EU (Withdrawal) Act 2018. One of several “conditions” for ratifying a withdrawal agreement is that MPs pass a “meaningful vote” on the treaty and a joint declaration about the next stage of negotiations. Theresa May failed to pass this for her deal. (3/x)

There are, as far as I can see, five plausible outcomes following Saturday's proceedings in Parliament.

Scenario (a) the Commons simply backs the Government's deal

This involves MPs first rejecting the Letwin amendment, then passing the original motion unamended. (1/x)
It is then up to the Government to decide how quickly to bring in the Withdrawal Agreement Bill. They might try to do it very quickly (to avoid in practice needing to ask for a "technical" extension) or they might ask for one and do things a bit more slowly (2/x)
Scenario (b) the Commons legally rejects the deal (to get an extension) but indicates a majority would support the deal if asked to pass the Withdrawal Agreement Bill

This involves MPs passing Letwin's amendment, then passing the main motion as amended. (3/x)

1) I was minding my business on Friday and saw 3 missed calls from @kenifeanyii. I called back and this was when I was hearing about this episode for the very first time. Prior to that, I knew nothing about anything going on in Nigeria.
2) I had very little time for a phone call as I was with my client so I told him to be brief. He vaguely described a visit by some lone female acquaintance. In his own words “we played truth or dare, we drank magical moments.....”

#Thread on AJ+ Holocaust denial that triggered wide outrage.
Denying or downplaying the #Holocaust is not new. It has been a recurring theme by AJ arabic since its establishment. 1/
AJ has continued to recycle myth that number of #Holocaust victims is debatable, deny extermination & has accused Zionist movement of benefiting from it.
AJ+, however, always claimed it is different, but n reality, it is run by the same leftists/Islamists who deny Holocaust 2/
What I find hilarious is how some top Israeli journalists have convinced themselves for years that appearing in AJ will help bringing peace and fight antisemitism.

So understand that, as I think @Mij_Europe first mentioned, the focus of meetings is on examining texts that might "entrench" whatever promises Labour get from Tories in this negotiation - and the current focus of this is in text of Withdrawal Agreement Bill. /2
@Mij_Europe It goes without saying that all this is moot if Tories and Labour cannot agree a deal. And with Labour digging in on Second Referendum requirement and Tories spooked by Brexit Party and prospects of customs union deal...it's hard (to put it kindly) to see how a deal happens/3

Keep seeing this ‘No Arrest No Prosecution’ thing, by people who don’t really care for the truth. One of biggest myths of 2018. In every one of these States people have been arrested & are being prosecuted. One example: Zamfara, 117 arrests: google.com/amp/s/www.vang…

I think the starting point for commentary like this is to say that no death of any Nigerian at the hands of bandits & criminals is acceptable or justifiable. Even a single death is one too many. And one of the primary responsibilities of any Govt is security. That’s not in doubt.
So, this matter of ‘No Arrests No Prosecutions.’ It’s very far from true. The simplest of Google searches puts the lie to it.Also the Police regularly put out statements on large-scale arrests. I’ll share more links as part of this thread. This from Kaduna google.com/amp/s/punchng.…
