In 2018 the Welsh Govt reached agreement with the UK Govt over the 'Power Grab'. On Reporting Scotland that evening the SNP was in the cross-hairs. The keyword was 'isolated'.
This week the FMs of Wales and Scotland held joint press-conference and attacked Boris Johnson's Brexit deal. Reporting Scotland took a very different approach to that taken in 2018. The UK Govt wasn't described as 'isolated' or 'under pressure ... and that wasn't all.
The first thing about the Reporting Scotland item was the introduction by the presenter. There was no mention of Boris Johnson's Govt being isolated or under pressure. The intro began with an attack *by* Johnson with the SNP on the defensive.
There was more. In the clip of the press conference the audio was very poor. The set up appeared amateurish. Why was the microphone so poorly positioned?
The Scottish FM was then shown speaking to camera. However, instead of Nicola Sturgeon giving a customary uninterrupted summary of her press conference, we instead see two clumsily edited clips of her answering loaded questions from Glenn Campbell.
Reporting Scotland then forgets about the press conference [of which the viewer has learned little] and shows a clip of Boris Johnson attacking the SNP.
Reporting Scotland then showed a short clip of Scottish Secretary Alister Jack. Jack faced no loaded questions and was allowed to make his point uninterrupted. An attack on Jemery Corbyn and independence followed. What about the press-conference?
The press conference was swiftly glossed over and sidelined. The FMs of Wales and Scotland had hoped for some professional coverage. Instead they got news management from a corporation keen to suppress whatever message the FMs had hoped to relay.
