Powerful. Listen to this child sing. h/t @duncanmccue. Notice the reporter has no follow up on his grandma's politically astute observation that it's good Greta does this work. white ppl listen to her, not Indigenous ppl who've said same forever. Interviewer foregrounds culture.
I point this out because it's a mark of liberal multiculturalism to cede a little space to cultural performance but only so far as it doesn't require restitution of land and "resources" to Indigenous ppl. Which is actually required for decolonization & lessening climate crisis.
Of course Indigenous peoples and cultures are place based so continuing to appropriate land and resources for the settler state guarantees that genocidal politics that bring us to climate crisis will continue.
I also was moved by the singer's grandma's comment re bringing women back to the drum & it being a way to heal. Key to decol is the "repatriation of Indigenous land and life" (Tuck & Yang). Settler demotion of Indigenous women's roles helped them steal the land. Don't forget.
repatriating Indigenous land & life requires affirming collective Indigenous knowledges globally. While much Indigenous place-based knowledge/practice has been surpressed for centuries, collectively there is still much relational knowledge to offer the world direction.
we must focus on collective knowledge/possibilities & not only knowledges/possibilities retained by individuals who are restricted w/in a colonial cage. Settlers like to focus on individual lives/practice in order to disavow collective Indigenous understandings & possibilities.
