“We’re able to be like Trump!” should not be our goal. Moments like this really strike at my “What do we do — and who will we be — after Trump?” concern.
I know the replies: “I’m reading too much into it,” “He actually deserves prison,” etc.
It just concerns me — and I’m really curious about people who are thinking about what happens in government and society after Trump.

I get this take, and it’s possible that it’s right. I’m more concerned that the “who we are” question might be settled by time we stop to figure out what we want that answer to be.
I hear this as well, and that’s completely fair.
I guess my bottom line is not so much a real concern about this particular ballgame moment as it is the honest question of what damage Trump has done to our democracy, and whether it’s repairable or this is just the beginning of a deep dive down into an unending horror show.
And, yes, I know Trump wasn’t the beginning of bad things — not at all — but it is a bad turn, whether an inevitable result of other moves or an anomaly.

Honestly, the thoughtful responses here helped. On Twitter. In 2019! Seriously, I think there can be a path forward — but I also think it will be difficult. If conversations like these can and do happen, though, I’m more hopeful than not.
