So here's a little prod dev lesson ...

1/14 At any given time, you'll have all levels of work in this diagram (A-I) happening simultaneously. All connected. The connections may be implicit...or obstructed and/or opaque or flimsy...but they're there.

2. Who tackles what varies. Take this example from an organization. You can see it is a spectrum. The types of missions we tackle vary.

A team might start with "G" to figure stuff out, but once they've gotten their groove, focus much more on C and D.

Try mapping your work!
3. There's another way to think about this using time.

When we walk into work we engage in little 1-3hr tasks. Say I ask you to "walk the tree" between your 1-3hr task all the way up to a 1-3year or decade mission. How would that play out?

1/8 When I unpack "the work" with teams, we invariably see *many* "shapes" of work. 15+ typically. There's absolutely no way a single process/workflow will work in all cases. You might get lucky to have four broad buckets, but still...

2/8 One of the central questions here is what "team" means in your context. To @cagan's post earlier this month, are you working on actual product team. Or is this "delivery team" or "feature team". The differences are very important and worthy of a discussion.
3/8 Without answering this question, you'll just go in circles. If indeed your organizations perceives engineers as "delivery" people, and designers as "make it ready for engineers to deliver" people, and product as "design this"...then you've already answered your questions

1. I stopped by the Good Design exhibit at @MuseumModernArt and was reminded how strange it is to put everyday objects up on a wall.

When you take something like a fork, which is meant to be held, and put in up like art, the way it looks is the primary way you evaluate it.
2. It's a good exhibit, but passively the effect of evaluating lounge chairs, typewriters and fishing rods without ever feeling them in your hand or experiencing them for their designed purpose, shallows what design is, and how visitors think about design.
3. In other words, there's nothing ugly here since aesthetics is the primary way visitors can evaluate what they see. But some great designs aren't necessarily all that stunning to look at. They will never be shown here.

A blind spot for designers and is overestimating the value of HCI knowledge. In any organization, it's mastery of skills in HHI (Human to human) and HGI (Human to Group) interaction that defines how effective you will be.

Over and over I keep seeing people struggle with decisive decision making in #prodmgmt... at every level. /1
To me this is one of the most important skills a Product Manager can master - how to make decisions about their product and communicate it upwards. /2
When I talk to company or product leaders, they frequently complain that their people don’t “step up and make decisions and own the product”.

I find that interesting because almost every prod mgr I meet tells me they can’t because their stakeholders/ manager won’t let them. /3
