They are really just giving me so many teachable quotes here. Ok so racism isn’t about individuals but rather about systems which impact individual behaviors but exist beyond the control of any single person. (See more below)
The racism I imply exists when a white woman stranger calls me sis is bc of the assumption of familiarity with me. Historically black woman have served as mammys, maids, & other “family-like” “family-lite” figures in white families at the cost of time with their own.
White people have long considered us “practically family” without any concern as to whether or not we consider them family or whether we desire such closeness. Because these folks were employers or otherwise had power over us, it was better to say nothing & go along with it.
This relates in many ways to conversations recently about the appropriateness of people calling Maxine Waters & other black women elders auntie, especially white people.
