Mental health/self-care #thread: It was impossible for me to find a Black woman therapist who had experience with queer & polyamorous people, who took my insurance & who could see me on a regular (weekly or bi-monthly) basis here in Madison.
I currently see a white woman who is experienced, competent & understanding of race, sexuality & gender issues. That is enough. Her name is Mary. Mary is a solid ass person. (@nicolebyer’s therapist is also a white lady named Mary which makes me smile when she mentions it)
Notably, I have had therapists at nearly every transition point of my entire life (thanks Mom), so I can practically “therapize” myself. I mostly need the space & someone who will let me talk things out for myself & occasionally ask a good question. And call me on my BS.
I also have lots of friends with therapy experience who provide me support more specific to race, gender, sexuality, & work experiences when necessary. I don’t rely on just Mary. Mary is part of a larger network of support for me that I have been building for years.
