This years IEA World Energy Outlook will tweak its scenarios, highlighting two elements:
1. Where the global energy system is heading, based on current policy plans & investment choices
2. What needs to be done to reach the climate, energy access, pollution & other goals

1/
The New Policies Scenario will be renamed the "Stated Policies Scenario" (STEPS). STEPS is designed to reflect the impact not just of existing policy frameworks, but also of today’s stated policy plans.

The concept is to show where emissions will go without new policies.

2/
The Sustainable Development Scenario (SDS) achieves climate targets, cleaner air & universal access to energy simultaneously. This year, the SDS will be extended to 2050.

3/
The Sustainable Development Scenario is “likely” (with 66% probability) to limit global warming to 1.8°C, which is broadly equivalent to a 50% probability of 1.65°C stabilisation.

The pathway is achieved without any recourse to net negative emissions.

4/
Almost all the 1.5°C scenarios assessed by the IPCC (88 out of 90) assume some level of net negative emissions.

There are reasons to limit reliance on early-stage technologies for which future rates of deployment are highly uncertain. Early policy action is needed.
