Imagine how different journalism would look today if something like academic freedom and shared governance existed in the newsroom. And it's not entirely clear to me why they don't.
Just to expand on this: I've been reading a bunch of histories of academic freedom in the US and Canada. A common story is the struggle between institutional academic freedom and individual academic freedom. Admins want former - freedom from government. Faculty want latter.
This is reflected in the competing statements on academic freedom by CAUT (Canadian Association of University Teachers) and AUCC (Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada). CAUT's (pic 1) emphasizes faculty freedom FROM university leadership. AAUC's (pic 2) does not.
When we talk about freedom of the press, we are almost always talking like the AUCC. But considering how much the journalistic mission resembles the academic one, that's probably not a good thing.
