This seems ludicrously wrong and self-serving to me. Still, I take it as a mark of progress that so many people now regard their old affiliation with New Atheism as so toxic that they'll go to such lengths to disavow it.

I mean, the overlap between New Atheism and anti-SJWism is obvious, both ideologically (humanism + Enlightenment = good; Islam + moral relativism = bad) and in terms of personnel (Coyne, Boghossian, Harris, etc.). This isn't complicated.
Just demographically, the core of the progressive Left today is women, LGBTQ, and racialized/religious minorities. Not exactly the beating heart of the New Atheist movement, if I recall correctly.
Which isn't to say that there isn't an interesting realignment afoot. SoCons like Prager and Shapiro are making common cause with the IDW, while the Sokal Trio are off galavanting with religious nationalists.
