You know, people kind of have the attitude that 'ah well being spied on, tracked & all of our information collected - its just because of all this technology' but its not you know, it s because people started accepting it was ok. They could have read your mail before, they...
could have traced your phone calles and tapped your conversations. They could do all of these things before modern tech, if they really wanted to but they had to get a warrant, & they had to have reasonable cause that you were doing something bad, and they got into a lot of...
trouble if they broke those rules. If correct procedures weren't followed, if privacy was invaded without appropriate authority they lost court cases, everything they had became inadmissible. But they changed the rules, and we all just accepted it.
Its the same with data collection. I recenly enrolled my kids in school and the questionnaire I was asked to fill out! All sorts of intrusive questions are asked, & not only when you do serious things like enrolling kids in school, sometimes it happens when you just want to...
..do something mundane like join a 'rewards club'. What's my occupation? None of your bloody business we would have said in the 80s, do you want me as a customer or not?! Oh its just for statistics & improving our product offerings they say, be a champ, except that's bs, its...
..just the innocent people being fools, adding more information to their public record because there is no integrity for such a statistical study because the bad guys, the people who actually do have something to hide, they just lie...its the same with this business of voters...
..having their data used to determine how best their vote can be manipulated. Sure the technology can make it all much easier and convenient to do but it is NOT the fault of the technology. It is purely the fault of ethics. I think any psychologist (at least perhaps old school)..
..would immediately recognise that all of the experimenting that must be done to identify what works with persuading private citizens to behave in ways desirable to those investing in such techniques is absolutely unethical. Using such information to manipulate citizens is also..
..completely unethical.
The entire invasion of privacy, manipulation of data, keeping a record of citizens forever (it used to just be accepted that files were thrown out after a certain number of years), has not come about because of technology, it has come about because of a...
...willingness to let ethical standards slide, a laziness when it comes to recognising that incovenient rules often exist because smarter people identified where risks of abuses would become unavoidable if procedure wasn't followed.
When are such 'smarter' people going to...
...stand up once more & stop allowing themselves to be bullied, cowed and pressured into allowing shortcuts to be taken when it comes to ethics, privacy, decency and the protections that must be upheld to avoid the kinds of catastrophies we saw in the first half of last century?
