Warren supporters always go to her CFPB accomplishments as a reason to support her. The CFPB has been rendered useless by the Trump Administration. So, what good is her technocratic approach if it can be so easily dismantled by the next administration? 1/9
There’s a huge groundswell of public support around the ACA that has prevented Republicans from abolishing it completely but that’s not going to last long. We all want change but if we want it to last we have to start addressing the power structures that prevent progress. 2/9
That means grassroots organizing & coalition building that transcends our current political structure which is mostly controlled by those with enormous wealth. Warren wants to put a dent in that, for sure. But will it be a enough to make lasting change? 3/9
Not really. There is little about Warren’s policies that address systemic problems of power. Her rhetoric of “Big, Structural Change” smacks of reform that will inevitably be undermined by existing power structures. Rooting out corruption (which is Warren’s focus) helps but...4/9
...it doesn’t get to the heart of the problem which is that the system itself is designed to prevent progress. We might not be able to change that any time soon so we should be prepared to fight from the furtherest left position we can. 5/9
And if we expect to have a fighting chance, we need a massive movement alongside policy. I don’t think Warren believes this to be true but I think she knows that this is a growing sentiment which is why she’s starting to incorporate that rhetoric into her campaign without... 6/9
...putting real effort into making that movement a reality. Most of her movement building seems to be centered around outsourcing it to other organizations that may have a large grassroots base but still subscribe to a similar top-down, technocratic approach. 7/9
A lot of people on the left fear that Warren is reminiscent of Obama but I’m reminded more of Bill Clinton. Warren left the GOP when the Dems started to align more with her values, at a time when we saw a shift towards Clinton’s similar technocratic, top-down... 8/9
...approach that led to a shift of the Dems to the right, the GOP to extremism & a marginalization of everyone else. If we ever expect to have lasting change it has to start from the bottom-up. There is only 1 candidate driving that point home and it ain’t Warren. 9/9
